Candle Safety Guide

Candle Safety Guide

To ensure a safe and enjoyable candle experience, please follow these guidelines carefully. Studio Jaiklu's candles are crafted with natural soy wax and premium materials, requiring proper care for optimal use.

1. General Safety Instructions

These basic safety rules apply to all candles (both standard and wood wick):

  • Remove Packaging: Remove all packaging and labels before lighting.
  • Trim the Wick: Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch (6mm) before each use to ensure an even burn.
  • First Burn: Burn the candle until the wax melts to the edges of the container to prevent tunneling.
  • Ventilation: Use in a well-ventilated area, away from drafts, fans, or air currents.
  • Burn Time: Do not burn the candle for more than 3–4 hours at a time.
  • Supervise: Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep Away from Children and Pets: Place the candle out of reach of children and pets.
  • Heat-Resistant Surface: Always place the candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials.
  • Abnormal Flame: If the flame becomes too large or emits smoke, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and relight.
  • Stop Use When Wax Runs Low: Discontinue use when 1/2 inch (12.7mm) of wax remains to avoid overheating the container.

2. Standard Wick Candle Care

For standard wick candles, please follow these additional tips:

  • Regular Wick Maintenance: Trim the wick before each use to minimize smoke and ensure even burning.
  • Mushrooming or Smoke: If the wick mushrooms or produces excessive smoke, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and relight.

3. Wood Wick Candle Care

Wood wick candles provide a crackling ambiance and luxurious atmosphere. However, they require extra care:

Before Use

  • Remove Packaging: Remove all labels and packaging.
  • Trim the Wick: Keep the wood wick trimmed to 1/8 inch (3mm) for a steady flame and optimal burn.

Burning Tips

  • First Burn: Allow the wax to melt to the container's edge during the first use to prevent tunneling.
  • If the Flame Extinguishes: Trim the wick if it is too long, or create a wax pool and carefully remove excess wax around the wick if it is too short.

Safety Guidelines

  • Never move a burning candle. Allow the wax to cool completely before handling.
  • Use the candle on a heat-resistant surface and away from flammable objects.

4. Characteristics of Natural Soy Wax

Studio Jaiklu candles are handcrafted using natural soy wax. As a result, the following characteristics may occur:

  • Frosting: Over time, the surface may develop a white, frosted appearance. This is a natural crystallization process and does not affect the candle’s quality.
  • Wax Shrinkage or "Wet Spots": Wax may pull away from the container during cooling, creating what appears to be wet spots. This is a natural occurrence and does not impact performance.
  • Sinkholes: Small holes or depressions may appear near the wick. These are caused by the cooling process of natural wax and do not affect the burning performance.
  • Uneven Candle Surface: Fragrance oil and natural soy wax interact differently based on the oil’s properties. Some candles may have smooth surfaces, while others may appear uneven. This is a natural result of using additive-free, natural wax and does not impact product quality.

5. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why is my candle tunneling?
A: Tunneling occurs when the candle is not burned long enough during the first use. Allow the wax to melt to the container's edge to prevent this.

Q: The surface of my candle has turned white. What is this?
A: This is called frosting, a natural occurrence with soy wax. It does not affect the candle’s performance.

Q: My wick keeps going out or produces too much smoke.
A: Ensure the wick is trimmed to 1/8–1/4 inch before lighting. If the wick is too short, remove excess wax around it carefully.

Q: Why are there marks or spots on the container?
A: These marks are caused by the natural characteristics of soy wax and fragrance oils. They do not affect the candle's performance.

Q: The surface of my candle is uneven. Is this a defect?
A: Uneven surfaces can occur due to the natural properties of soy wax and fragrance oils. This is a natural feature of additive-free wax and does not affect performance.

Q: Why does my candle have small holes near the wick?
A: These are called sinkholes, a natural result of the cooling process of soy wax. They are common in handcrafted candles and do not affect burning performance.

Q: Can pregnant individuals use candles?
A: While we use phthalate-free and paraben-free fragrance oils, we do not recommend candle use during pregnancy due to potential sensitivities. Please consult a doctor for further guidance.
